Dhurrie, sometimes spelled "dari," "durrie" or "durry," is a type of rug native to India and its surrounding regions, Burma, Pakistan and Afghanistan. These loom-woven rugs are made using techniques employed for centuries. The flat-weave design used to create dhurrie rugs makes them both durable and decorative. Indian versions of the rug are a staple in rug and import shops in the United States.

The Weave

A flat, no-pile weave is one of the key distinguishing features of a dhurrie rug. The rug's tight weave makes it durable and easy to clean. Shaking the rug out removes accumulated dirt and debris, and a vacuum cleaner takes care of the rest. The warp or lengthwise portions of a dhurrie are not visible, except at their fringed edges, primarily due to the horizontal loom weaving techniques used to create the rug.

Fashion Flip

Part of the appeal of a dhurrie, besides its durability, is that the reverse side is also patterned, meaning the rug can be flipped for a fresh surface. The pattern is essentially the same on the reverse side, with a little variation in color due to the part of the strand that shows when turned over. The rugs do not have a built-in pad or backing, which also makes them easier to carry and shake out for a quick cleaning.

Tufted Rugs

Hand tufted rugs (also called hand made) are produced by punching individual yarns through a fabric sheet using a device called a “tufting gun”. Once the rug has been completed a second fabric is glued to the back to hold the yarns in place.

Hand tufted rugs required more time to produce, generally contain higher quality materials and can be more detailed.

Hand knotted rugs are the cream of the rug world. These rugs are produced using ancient techinques, have unlimited design and color variations and may have investment value in years to come. Hand knotted rugs are made on a vertical frame called a hand knotting loom. Columns of threads are stretched from the top to the of the loom. These are called the warp threads and are the foundation of the rug. They also form the fringe ends of the rug and are very important to it’s longevity.

Handloom

Handloom’ is woven cloth without the use of any electricity. Hand weaving is done on pit looms or frame looms generally located in weavers’ homes. Weaving is primarily the interlacing of two sets of yarn – the warp (length) and the weft (width). The equipment that facilitates this interlacing is the loom.

Advantages of Handloom Material

The handloom experience (soft, comfortable and durable) is due to the human handling of the yarn in the weaving process. As a result, yarn and the fabric are much less stressed and damaged. Hand woven cotton is known for its breathability as compared to mill made cotton. This implies that it allows more air penetration making it cooler, softer and more absorbent. It keeps you cooler in summers and warm in winters.

Kelims

A Kilim is a flat tapestry-woven carpet or rug traditionally produced in countries of the former Persian Empire, including Iran, Azerbaijan, the Balkans and the Turkic countries of Central Asia. Kilims can be purely decorative or can function as prayer rugs.

Kilims are produced by tightly interweaving the warp and weft strands of the weave to produce a flat surface with no pile. Kilim weaves are tapestry weaves, technically weft-faced plain weaves, that is, the horizontal weft strands are pulled tightly downward so that they hide the vertical warp strands.

When the end of a color boundary is reached, the weft yarn is wound back from the boundary point. Thus, if the boundary of a field is a straight vertical line, a vertical slit forms between the two different color areas where they meet. For this reason, most kilims can be classed as "slit woven" textiles. The slits are beloved by collectors, as they produce very sharp-etched designs, emphasizing the geometry of the weave. Weaving strategies for avoiding slit formation, such as interlocking, produce a more blurred design image.

The weft strands, which carry the visible design and color, are almost always wool, whereas the hidden warp strands can be either wool or cotton. The warp strands are only visible at the ends, where they emerge as the fringe. This fringe is usually tied in bunches, to ensure against loosening or unraveling of the weave.
